Sabbath Musings:

Acharei Mot: Perfect Imperfections

In this week’s Torah portion, we explore complex laws of sacrifices and rituals for atonement. At first glance, this might seem rather depressing, but actually there’s a rather uplifting message underneath.

Judaism does not demand perfection.

Our tradition understands that making mistakes is part of being human, and reassures us that it’s okay when we do.
The world will go on. We will go on.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by feelings of guilt or shame—emotions that can prevent us from reaching our full potential. However, these ancient rituals provide a way to move beyond our mistakes. They encourage us to confront our errors head-on, learn from them, and move on without being weighed down by them.

Don’t forget, the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, focuses not on our moments of success but on admitting our failures, growing from them, and striving to be better.
In our lives today, where the pressure to be perfect is only intensified by social media and other influences, the Torah offers us a liberating message: perfection is not the goal. The goal is to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be.

After all, a mistake that we learn from brings us one step closer to fulfilling our ultimate potential.
